Uvod

Žaljenje, patriotizam, neizvesnost, ponos i strah…

Introduction

Regret, patriotism, uncertainty, pride and fear…

The photography series ”Merseyside and Brexit” by Berlin photographer Sandra Ratkovic is devoted to the upheavals in England that go hand in hand with the Brexit vote.

Sandra Ratkovic traveled to England several times after the Brexit vote had been decided and photographed people and scenes in Merseyside, Northern England.

The underlying question of the photography series is:

Can you guess who voted for Brexit and who didn’t?

Sandra Ratkovic asked people in Merseyside if she could take a spontaneous photograph of them in the streets. Afterwards, she asked them about their vote and their opinions regarding Brexit.

The portraits play with the viewer’s expectations, asking the viewer to decide for themselves whether the person portrayed may have voted for Brexit – or not.

The photographer’s intention is that the viewer of the photographs is pushed, through this process, to examine – and question – their internalised assessments and assumptions.

Another important question that Sandra Ratkovic hopes to examine with her images is:

What is the situation of the people in England after the Brexit vote, and what are the implications regarding visual changes in everyday life and in the urban scenarios, such as a rise of patriotic symbols.

Especially in comparison with the traditional image and aesthetics of Great Britain.
